The computer has many uses and have already become an integral part of my life. Certainly there are both advantages and disadvantages of computers, but in my opinion, I feel that computers are of great importance in my daily activities. For example, I need computers to work on my assignments, to help me gather information and learn about new things, to help me find places and locations, to help me communicate effectively with my friends and family, as well as a platform to keep me updated with current issues/events/happenings from all around the world. Personally, I feel that computers are tools that makes working and leisure convenient, it increases the productivity of users, and it serves to enhance learning.

Five basic categories of computers:

(1) Embedded computers

An embedded computer is a computer that has only one or more functions like a house hold item or a toy. An embedded computer is a single chip that contains all of the elements that are essential for any computer i.e. RAM, ROM, CPU, Input, Output, Clock.

  • Another term often used for an embedded computer is a 'micro controller'. This is because the main purpose of an embedded computer is to control something. All of the following contain an embedded computer:

  • telephones
  • televisions
  • cameras
  • washing machines
  • microwave cookers
  • dishwashers
  • cars


(2) Mobile devices
A mobile device, which is also referred to as a handheld, handheld device or handheld computer, is a pint-sized computing device. Mobile devices usually come with a touch or non-touch display screen and sometimes, even a mini keyboard. There are many types of mobile devices, the commonest among them being, mobile phones, smartphones, PDAs, pagers and Personal Navigation Devices.

(3) Personal computers

personal computer (PC) is any general-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and original sales price make it useful for individuals, and which is intended to be operated directly by an end-user with no intervening computer operator. Example: Personal laptops, Ipads. 

(4) Mainframe computers

Mainframe computers are powerful computers used primarily by corporate and governmental organizations for critical applications, bulk data processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and transaction processing. Example: ATM machines, systems of credit card companies.

(5) Supercomputers

supercomputer is a computer at the frontline of current processing capacity, particularly speed of calculation. The computer is mainly used for the mathematical and numerical functions as the supercomputers are very strong in calculations so they provide answer to each and every number that had been entered there. The main function of supercomputers is to provide each and everything to the person at the faster rate sp most of the time that is spent by the supercomputers is in the execution of the programs so that they can be opened at a faster rate. This is one of the most beneficial features which make a huge difference between the supercomputers and the other types of computers that had been invented so far. Supercomputers are very much efficient in solving all the problems that are complex and are scientific in nature. Example: Weather forecasting

Use of computer-based tools to communicate, collaborate, and solve problems in education:

1)Asynchronous Online Communication Tools

Asynchronous tools enable communication and collaboration over a period of time through a "different time-different place" mode. These tools allow people to connect together at each person's own convenience and own schedule. Asynchronous tools are useful for sustaining dialogue and collaboration over a period of time and providing people with resources and information that are instantly accessible, day or night. Asynchronous tools possess the advantage of being able to involve people from multiple time zones. In addition, asynchronous tools are helpful in capturing the history of the interactions of a group, allowing for collective knowledge to be more easily shared and distributed. The primary drawback of asynchronous technologies is that they require some discipline to use when used for ongoing communities of practice (e.g., people typically must take the initiative to "login" to participate) and they may feel "impersonal" to those who prefer higher-touch synchronous technologies.

2) Synchronous Online Communication Tools

Synchronous tools enable real-time communication and collaboration in a "same time-different place" mode. These tools allow people to connect at a single point in time, at the same time. Synchronous tools possess the advantage of being able to engage people instantly and at the same point in time. The primary drawback of synchronous tools is that, by definition, they require same-time participation -different time zones and conflicting schedules can create communication challenges
Examples: videoconferencing, instant messaging and chat, and complement with face-to-face meetings


3) Social Bookmarking And Tagging

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online. Many online bookmark management services have launched since 1996; Delicious, founded in 2003, popularized the terms "social bookmarking" and "tagging". Tagging is a significant feature of social bookmarking systems, enabling users to organize their bookmarks in flexible ways.
Examples: Youtube, bookmarking links to web pages 

4) Social Networking

A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.
Examples: Facebook, Twittter, GooglePlus, Myspace etc

What I learned (KWLQ) 

What I know: In this current era of advanced technologies, computers are an essential part of life that brings forth many benefits and conveniences to users. It is important that children are introduced to computers from young, and that IT is integrated in the curriculum to enhance learning and development. Even though computers have already formed an integral part of our lives, it is crucial that the use of computers are regulated for young children, for the appropriate purposes. 

What I want to know: I want to learn more about the benefits of computers on young children, and at the same time, how they can pose as a problem in this current 21st century. 

What I learned: I gained better insights to the advantages and disadvantages of computers, and how they are commonly used. Through this session, I learned about the different types of computers and its uses, as well as how the use of computers have progressed from past to present. 

Questions: I would like to find out more about how we as educators can efficiently integrate IT into the preschool curriculum. What are the things that we can do with the help of computers to enhance learning in children? How can we evaluate the suitability of programs that are for children?
